"Priority areas for establishing national forests in the Brazilian Amazon" Socioeconomic Concerns Natasha Grist University of East Anglia
Published: October 11, 2002 This article is timely, given the swiftness of the Avanca Brasil project's current progress, and the need to bring the conservation agenda to bear on this project. This article cries out for a follow-up, or Part II, that examines the socioeconomic conditions current in those areas that have been delimited. In the model, conflict is apparently avoided, or limited, through the application of a “distance from populated areas” parameter. However, all land in the Brazilian Amazon is owned or inhabited to some degree. What are the political and socioeconomic ramifications of such a model? Would adoption of sustainable forest management be mandatory in these areas in the authors' view? Answers to these questions should help fill gaps in understanding changes in this critical area.
