"Biological invasion risks and the public good: an economic perspective" More Globally Coordinated Approach Needed to Control Aliens Ross Chapman Parks Canada
Published: April 12, 2002 I agree with the underlying argument of Perrings et al. (2002) that the problem of invasive species is largely economic and that economic solutions are required. However, on a practical level, I would argue that we will never be able to totally control alien species because of the global interconnectedness of our transportation systems. Sometimes, for example, alien species are spread unknowingly, even on aircraft tires. However, the authors are right when they say that we need a more coordinated global approach. Such an approach (and there is already some effort being made in this direction) should examine the science of aliens in their natural habitats (particularly natural predators), look at how they are transported abroad, and implement effective mechanisms for control once they arrive.
