She holds a PhD in Sustainability Science through which she explored the role of sense of place and cultural rituals in stewardship of agricultural landscapes, and community conservation interventions in South Africa. Masterson’s research draws attention to the cultural values of nature which play a critical role in people’s wellbeing in the context of rural-urban migration in the developing world. She has a particular interest in participatory and emancipatory methods and how they may be expanded to facilitate mobilization of local and Indigenous knowledge systems in transdisciplinary arenas. She currently leads a research project on shifting gender identities in conservation in South Africa and Australia, and a project on Indigenous resistance to wind energy expansion in Brazil and Sweden.
